Is the symbol of New York really the most famous Christmas present ever?
Many say that the Statue of Liberty is the biggest thing ever given as a Christmas present and the most famous Christmas present too. Weighing 225 tons and with 151 feet in height, it definitely would be, if New York actually received it on Christmas. Therefore, this connection between the most popular holiday and the symbol of America is probably an urban myth. Yes, the Statue of Liberty was indeed a gift, from the French people to the Americans, but they received it on 28th October in 1886. So, it may be the biggest and most famous gift ever, but not the most famous Christmas present. It has something to do with one holiday though – but that holiday is 4th July.
About the Statue of Liberty
The designer of the Statue was Bartholdi, a French sculptor. It was built by Gustave Eiffel, the one who built the Eiffel Tower. It is located on the Liberty Island. As you all know, it represents the goddess of freedom, Libertas, holding a torch and a plate. The Statue commemorates the date of the signing of The Declaration of Independence. Bartholdi’s inspiration came from a French politician. He said that the monument commemorating this important event would have to be a joint American and French project. The reason for this are the ideological connections between the French and the American Revolution. Located in the New York Harbor, for years it was the first thing that the immigrants arriving to America would see. Therefore it became the symbol of the openness of America. It may not be the most famous Christmas present, but it has definitely made many people happy.
